How to prepare for your recording

You don't need a studio. A quiet room, headphones and a laptop with Chrome get you 90% of the way there. Here's everything to know.

  1. 1

    Book a time.

Pick a slot above. Your confirmation email includes your Riverside studio link.

  2. 2

    Quick pre-call (15 min).

We talk through the topic, your story and anything off limits. Not booked yet? Grab one at /podcast-precall.

  3. 3

    Recording day (about 60 min).

Open your link 10 minutes early. You'll land in a lobby to pick your mic, camera and headphones. If you see "This studio is not live yet," hang tight, we're opening it. Expect a few minutes of sound check, then about 45 to 50 minutes of conversation.

  4. 4

    After we wrap.

Keep the Riverside tab open until your upload reaches 100%. Riverside records you locally in high quality and uploads it after we stop. We'll let you know when the episode goes live.

Audio (most important)

  • Wear headphones (wired is best) so our voices don't echo into your mic.
  • Use an external or headset mic if you have one. AirPods are fine if that's all you have.
  • Pick a small room with soft stuff: rugs, curtains, a couch. Avoid kitchens and glass-walled rooms.
  • Silence your phone and turn on Do Not Disturb on your computer.

Video

  • Raise your camera to eye level (a stack of books works).
  • Frame from mid-chest up with your eyes about a third from the top.
  • Look at the lens when you talk, not at yourself.
  • Use a laptop or desktop. Phone works in the Riverside app, held sideways on a stand.

Lighting

  • Face your light source. A window in front of you is perfect.
  • Never sit with a bright window behind you.
  • No window? Put a lamp or ring light just behind and above your camera.
  • Glasses? Tilt the light slightly up or to the side to cut glare.

Space & internet

  • Plug in with an ethernet cable if you can. Otherwise sit close to your router.
  • Close other tabs and apps, pause VPN and Dropbox or Google Drive syncing.
  • Keep your laptop plugged in to power.
  • Tidy background: a shelf, plant or art beats a blank wall or a messy room.
